Meriania glabra
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Meriania glabra faces significant pressure from deforestation and agricultural expansion throughout its Andean cloud forest range. Mining activities and infrastructure development have fragmented remaining populations, while climate change threatens to shift suitable habitat zones upslope beyond the species' elevational limits. The conversion of native forest to cattle pasture and coffee plantations has eliminated substantial portions of its historical range.
Habitat
This species inhabits humid montane cloud forests and forest edges in the Andes, typically occurring at elevations between 1,500-2,800 meters. It thrives in the perpetually moist conditions of cloud-shrouded slopes where epiphytes are abundant and temperatures remain relatively cool year-round.
