Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Marbled Duck faces severe population declines primarily due to widespread wetland destruction and degradation across its Mediterranean and Middle Eastern range. Intensive agriculture, urban development, and water extraction have eliminated or severely compromised many of its traditional breeding and wintering sites. Hunting pressure remains significant in several range countries, while climate change is reducing water availability in already arid regions, further shrinking suitable habitat.
Habitat
The Marbled Duck inhabits shallow freshwater and brackish wetlands including marshes, lagoons, rice fields, and temporary pools with dense emergent vegetation. It prefers secluded wetlands with extensive reed beds and floating vegetation that provide cover for feeding and nesting.
