Lowland Long-nosed Squirrel
Hyosciurus ileile
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Lowland Long-nosed Squirrel faces severe pressure from rapid deforestation across its limited range in Sulawesi's lowland forests. Palm oil plantations and agricultural expansion have fragmented its habitat into increasingly isolated patches, while logging operations continue to degrade remaining forest quality. The species' specialized diet and arboreal lifestyle make it particularly vulnerable to canopy loss and forest fragmentation.
Habitat
This species inhabits primary and secondary lowland tropical rainforests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, typically below 1,000 meters elevation. It prefers dense canopy environments with abundant fruiting trees and maintains territories in both undisturbed primary forest and moderately degraded secondary growth.
