Ixora raiateensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Ixora raiateensis faces severe threats from habitat destruction on its native island of Raiatea in French Polynesia. The species is critically endangered due to extensive deforestation and land conversion for agriculture and development, which has eliminated most of its original forest habitat. Invasive plant species further degrade remaining forest fragments, while the species' extremely limited range makes it vulnerable to any additional disturbances or environmental changes.
Habitat
This endemic shrub occurs in the remaining lowland and montane forests of Raiatea island in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. It typically grows in humid forest understory environments at various elevations across the island's mountainous terrain.
