Ilex trichocarpa
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Ilex trichocarpa faces severe pressure from deforestation and habitat conversion throughout its limited range in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. The species' restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to ongoing agricultural expansion and urban development that continues to fragment its remaining forest habitat. Climate change poses an additional threat by altering the specific temperature and moisture conditions this holly species requires in its montane forest environment.
Habitat
This endemic Brazilian holly inhabits montane Atlantic Forest remnants at elevations between 800-1,500 meters in southeastern Brazil. It grows in humid, well-drained forest understory and edge environments within one of the world's most threatened biodiversity hotspots.
