Homalium moto
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Homalium moto faces severe pressure from deforestation and agricultural expansion across its limited range in Madagascar's eastern rainforests. The species' restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, while slash-and-burn agriculture continues to reduce the quality and connectivity of remaining forest patches. Mining activities and infrastructure development pose additional localized threats to critical populations.
Habitat
This endemic Malagasy tree species inhabits humid lowland and montane rainforests of eastern Madagascar, typically growing in primary forest understory and forest edges at elevations between 200-1,200 meters. It requires well-drained soils and consistent moisture levels characteristic of Madagascar's eastern escarpment forests.
