Hirasea chichijimana
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Hirasea chichijimana faces severe pressure from invasive species, particularly the introduced flatworm Platydemus manokwari, which preys directly on native land snails. Habitat degradation from introduced plants and human development on Chichijima Island has reduced available forest refugia. The species' extremely limited range on a single small oceanic island makes it exceptionally vulnerable to stochastic events and environmental changes.
Habitat
This endemic land snail inhabits the native forest remnants of Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara Islands, Japan. It requires moist, shaded environments with leaf litter and decaying organic matter typical of subtropical oceanic island forests.
