Overview

Nyassachromis breviceps is a species of cichlid that is endemic to Lake Malawi, where it is only found in the southern part of the lake. It prefers areas with sandy substrates but needs a supply of small pebbles for nest building. This species can reach a length of 15.4 centimetres (6.1 in) in total length. This species was last observed in Lake Malawi in 1997 and is thought that it may be extinct, caused by overexploitation by artisanal fishermen.

Nyassachromis breviceps faces severe population decline primarily due to overfishing and destructive fishing practices in Lake Malawi. The species has experienced dramatic habitat degradation from increased sedimentation and pollution, particularly in shallow rocky areas where it breeds. Competition and hybridization with introduced tilapia species has further compromised remaining populations, while climate-driven changes in lake water levels threaten critical spawning sites.

Habitat

This endemic cichlid inhabits the shallow rocky shores and intermediate depths of Lake Malawi, typically found at depths of 5-20 meters among boulder fields and rocky substrates. The species prefers areas with moderate wave action and clear water, particularly around rocky promontories where it feeds on algae and small invertebrates.
