Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Golden-winged Sparrow faces severe pressure from rapid deforestation and agricultural expansion throughout its restricted Andean range in Colombia and Venezuela. Mining activities and cattle ranching have fragmented its cloud forest habitat, while climate change is pushing suitable temperature and humidity zones to higher elevations. The species' small population size and limited dispersal ability make it particularly vulnerable to habitat loss, with some subpopulations becoming increasingly isolated.
Habitat
The Golden-winged Sparrow inhabits humid montane cloud forests and forest edges between 1,800-3,200 meters elevation in the northern Andes. It prefers dense understory vegetation with thick moss cover and epiphytes, typically found in primary and well-developed secondary forests with consistent moisture levels.
