Garypus titanius

Unknown

Overview

Garypus titanius, the giant pseudoscorpion, is the largest species of pseudoscorpion—small, scorpion-looking creatures—in the world. Critically endangered, it is restricted to Boatswain Bird Island, a small rocky island off Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Pseudoscorpions are venomous arachnids and are generally tiny—around 3 mm long.

The giant pseudoscorpion, though, can grow to five times that size at 11 mm. It lives among seabird colonies, feeding mainly at night on smaller prey such as insects. It belongs to the Garypidae family.

Garypus titanius faces severe threats from habitat destruction due to urban development and agricultural expansion across its limited range. The species' extremely restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to localized disturbances, while climate change poses additional risks through altered precipitation patterns affecting the microhabitats essential for this pseudoscorpion's survival.

Threat summary

Habitat

Garypus titanius inhabits specialized microhabitats within Mediterranean scrubland and rocky outcrops, typically found under stones, in leaf litter, and within soil crevices. The species requires specific moisture and temperature conditions found in these protected terrestrial environments.
