Geostachys chayanii
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Geostachys chayanii faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and urban development across its limited range in the Western Ghats of India. The species' specialized habitat requirements make it particularly vulnerable to forest fragmentation, as remaining populations become increasingly isolated in small forest patches. Mining activities and infrastructure development in the region pose additional threats to the remaining suitable habitat.
Habitat
This endemic species inhabits moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in India, typically found in shaded understory areas with rich organic soil. It occurs at elevations between 400-1200 meters in areas with high humidity and consistent moisture levels.
