Gasteranthus mutabilis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Gasteranthus mutabilis faces severe pressure from deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its limited range in the Andean cloud forests of Ecuador and Colombia. Agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and crop cultivation, has eliminated much of its specialized epiphytic habitat. The species' narrow altitudinal requirements make it particularly vulnerable to climate change, as warming temperatures force suitable conditions to higher elevations where habitat availability becomes increasingly restricted.
Habitat
This epiphytic plant inhabits the humid cloud forests of the Andes, typically growing on moss-covered tree trunks and branches at elevations between 1,800-2,800 meters. It requires the consistently moist, fog-shrouded conditions characteristic of montane cloud forest ecosystems.
