Haplochromis aeneocolor
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Haplochromis aeneocolor faces severe pressure from the introduction of Nile perch (Lates niloticus) into Lake Victoria, which has caused dramatic population declines across native cichlid species. Overfishing and the use of destructive fishing methods have further reduced populations, while eutrophication from agricultural runoff and sewage has degraded water quality in critical breeding areas. Hybridization with closely related Haplochromis species may also threaten the genetic integrity of remaining populations.
Habitat
This endemic cichlid inhabits the shallow, rocky and sandy shores of Lake Victoria, typically found in areas with moderate vegetation cover. The species prefers depths of 2-10 meters where it feeds on invertebrates and small fish among the substrate.
