Elaeodendron aquifolium
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Elaeodendron aquifolium faces severe pressure from deforestation and habitat conversion throughout its limited range in the Western Ghats of India. The species is particularly vulnerable to agricultural expansion and urban development, which have fragmented its remaining forest habitat into isolated patches. Collection for traditional medicinal uses has further reduced wild populations, while the species' slow growth rate and specific habitat requirements limit its ability to recover from disturbance.
Habitat
This endemic tree species inhabits the evergreen and semi-evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in southern India, typically occurring at elevations between 500-1500 meters. It grows in moist, well-drained soils within the forest understory and edges, often associated with other endemic flora of this biodiversity hotspot.
