Drymonia ecuadorensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Drymonia ecuadorensis faces severe pressure from ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation throughout its limited range in Ecuador's cloud forests. Agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and crop cultivation, continues to reduce and isolate remaining forest patches. The species' specialized epiphytic lifestyle makes it particularly vulnerable to microclimate changes caused by forest edge effects and canopy opening.
Habitat
This epiphytic plant inhabits the humid cloud forests of Ecuador's Andean slopes, typically growing on tree trunks and branches in the understory and mid-canopy levels. It requires the consistent moisture and stable microclimatic conditions characteristic of montane cloud forest ecosystems between 1,500-2,500 meters elevation.
