Dovyalis xanthocarpa
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Dovyalis xanthocarpa faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and urban development across its limited range in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania. The species' restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, as remaining forest patches become increasingly isolated. Mining activities and charcoal production have accelerated forest clearance in key areas where this endemic shrub occurs.
Habitat
This endemic shrub occurs in montane forest understory and forest edges within the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania, typically at elevations between 1,200-2,000 meters. It favors moist, well-drained soils in both primary and secondary forest habitats.
