Diospyros walkeri
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Diospyros walkeri faces severe pressure from deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its limited range in Sri Lanka's wet zone forests. Agricultural expansion, particularly for tea and rubber plantations, has eliminated much of its natural lowland forest habitat. The species' restricted distribution makes remaining populations highly vulnerable to localized disturbances and climate-induced changes in rainfall patterns.
Habitat
This endemic ebony species inhabits Sri Lanka's tropical wet zone forests, typically found in lowland and lower montane rainforests at elevations up to 1,000 meters. It grows in the understory and canopy of primary and secondary forests with high humidity and consistent rainfall.
