Wandolleck's Button Frog
Cycloramphus ohausi
Overview
Cycloramphus ohausi is a species of frog in the family Cycloramphidae. It is endemic to Serra dos Órgãos in southeastern Brazil. The specific name ohausi honors Friedrich Ohaus, a German physicist and herpetologist. Common name Wandolleck's button frog has been proposed for this species.
Cycloramphus ohausi faces severe threats from habitat destruction due to urban expansion and agricultural conversion in its restricted Atlantic Forest range. The species' dependence on pristine stream environments makes it particularly vulnerable to water pollution and sedimentation from nearby human activities. Climate change poses an additional threat by altering precipitation patterns and stream flow regimes essential for its breeding ecology.
Habitat
This critically endangered frog inhabits pristine Atlantic Forest streams and adjacent riparian vegetation in southeastern Brazil. It requires clean, fast-flowing water with rocky substrates for breeding and forested areas with high humidity for terrestrial activities.
