Santa Catarina Button Frog
Cycloramphus catarinensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Cycloramphus catarinensis faces severe population decline due to extensive deforestation and habitat fragmentation within its restricted Atlantic Forest range in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Urban expansion and agricultural conversion have eliminated much of its specialized montane forest habitat. The species' dependence on pristine stream environments makes it particularly vulnerable to water pollution and sedimentation from nearby human activities.
Habitat
This endemic frog inhabits montane Atlantic Forest streams and adjacent riparian vegetation in the Serra do Mar mountain range of Santa Catarina, Brazil. It requires pristine, fast-flowing rocky streams with dense canopy cover and high humidity levels typical of undisturbed cloud forest environments.
