Overview
Cutín de Sigchos (Pristimantis floridus) is a small terrestrial frog endemic to the cloud forests of Ecuador's Andean slopes. This species displays cryptic brown and tan coloration with distinctive skin textures that provide excellent camouflage among leaf litter and moss-covered surfaces. As a direct-developing frog, it plays an important role in forest ecosystems as both predator of small invertebrates and prey for larger vertebrates.
Cutín de Sigchos faces significant threats from habitat loss and fragmentation due to agricultural expansion and human settlement in its limited montane range. The species' restricted distribution in the Ecuadorian Andes makes it particularly vulnerable to environmental changes and localized threats that could impact entire populations.
Habitat
This species inhabits montane cloud forests and humid Andean slopes between 2,000-3,500 meters elevation in central Ecuador. It occurs in areas with dense vegetation, moss-covered trees, and high humidity typical of upper montane forest ecosystems.
