Choerophryne siegfriedi
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Choerophryne siegfriedi faces severe threats from habitat destruction due to logging and agricultural expansion within its extremely limited range in Papua New Guinea's montane forests. The species' restriction to high-elevation cloud forests makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts, as warming temperatures force suitable habitat upslope with nowhere left to retreat. Mining activities and infrastructure development in the region pose additional pressures on the remaining forest fragments where this endemic frog persists.
Habitat
This species inhabits montane cloud forests and moss forests at elevations between 2,400-3,000 meters in the central highlands of Papua New Guinea. It requires pristine forest conditions with high humidity, dense moss coverage, and minimal human disturbance typical of these high-altitude ecosystems.
