Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Chirocephalus croaticus faces severe threats from habitat degradation and loss of its specialized temporary pool ecosystems. Agricultural intensification and urban development have eliminated many of the shallow, seasonal water bodies this fairy shrimp requires for reproduction. Climate change poses an additional risk by altering precipitation patterns that are critical for maintaining the ephemeral pools where this species completes its life cycle.
Habitat
This fairy shrimp inhabits temporary freshwater pools, seasonal ponds, and ephemeral wetlands that fill during winter and spring rains then dry completely during summer months. These shallow, nutrient-poor water bodies are typically found in Mediterranean karst landscapes and agricultural areas of the Balkans.
