Casearia catharinensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Casearia catharinensis faces severe pressure from ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation within Brazil's Atlantic Forest biome. Urban expansion and agricultural conversion have eliminated much of its original forest habitat, while remaining populations are increasingly isolated in small forest fragments. The species' limited distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to local extinctions from habitat disturbance and edge effects.
Habitat
This endemic Brazilian tree species inhabits remnant Atlantic Forest fragments in Santa Catarina state. It occurs in humid lowland and montane forests, typically growing in the understory and forest edges of this highly threatened biodiversity hotspot.
