Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Betta pi faces severe habitat degradation from palm oil plantation expansion and logging activities throughout its native range in Peninsular Malaysia. Water pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development has contaminated the shallow, slow-moving streams this species depends on for breeding and survival. The species' extremely limited distribution makes entire populations vulnerable to single disturbance events, while collection for the ornamental fish trade adds additional pressure on wild populations.
Habitat
Betta pi inhabits shallow, slow-moving forest streams and small tributaries with soft, acidic water in lowland tropical rainforests of Peninsular Malaysia. The species prefers areas with dense vegetation cover, fallen logs, and leaf litter that provide shelter and breeding sites.
