Atlantasellus cavernicolus
Overview
Atlantasellus is a genus of crustaceans, and the only member of the family Atlantasellidae. It contains these species:Atlantasellus cavernicolus is endemic to Bermuda and is included on the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered. Atlantasellus dominicanus was described in 2001, having been collected in coastal karsts in the Dominican Republic.
Atlantasellus cavernicolus faces severe threats from groundwater pollution and cave system disturbance in its extremely limited range. The species' dependence on pristine cave environments makes it highly vulnerable to contamination from agricultural runoff and urban development above ground. Human activities including cave exploration and potential quarrying operations pose additional risks to the delicate subterranean ecosystem this endemic isopod requires for survival.
Habitat
This species inhabits freshwater cave systems and underground aquifers in the Canary Islands, specifically adapted to the stable, dark conditions of subterranean environments. It requires clean, well-oxygenated groundwater with specific temperature and chemical parameters found only in pristine cave ecosystems.
