Aquilaria banaensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Aquilaria banaensis faces severe pressure from illegal harvesting for its valuable agarwood, which forms when the tree becomes infected with specific fungi. Habitat destruction through deforestation and agricultural expansion in its limited Vietnamese range compounds these threats. The species' slow growth rate and specific ecological requirements make natural recovery extremely difficult once populations are depleted.
Habitat
This species inhabits tropical montane forests in the Ba Na Hills of central Vietnam, typically growing in well-drained soils at elevations between 700-1,500 meters. It occurs in both primary and secondary forest formations, often associated with other Aquilaria species in mixed evergreen forest communities.
