Aplocheilichthys sp. nov. 'Rovuma'
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
This undescribed killifish species faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and water extraction in the Rovuma River basin, which has significantly altered natural flow regimes and water quality. Sedimentation from upstream farming activities threatens the clear, shallow waters essential for breeding, while increasing human settlement along riverbanks has led to pollution from domestic waste and agricultural runoff.
Habitat
Inhabits shallow, clear streams and seasonal pools within the Rovuma River drainage system along the Tanzania-Mozambique border. Prefers areas with sandy or rocky substrates and moderate vegetation cover, typically in elevations below 500 meters.
