Agave abisaii
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Agave abisaii faces severe pressure from habitat destruction due to agricultural expansion and urban development in its limited Ethiopian range. The species' extremely restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to localized threats, while overgrazing by livestock degrades the remaining suitable habitat. Climate change poses an additional long-term threat through altered precipitation patterns in the already arid regions where this endemic agave occurs.
Habitat
Agave abisaii is endemic to the arid highlands of Ethiopia, typically found in rocky outcrops and steep slopes in semi-desert scrubland. The species occupies well-drained soils at elevations between 1,500-2,200 meters, often growing among other drought-adapted succulents and thorny shrubs.
