Acalypha schimpffii
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Acalypha schimpffii faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and urban development across its limited range in East Africa. Habitat fragmentation has isolated remaining populations, reducing genetic diversity and limiting natural regeneration. Overgrazing by livestock in remaining natural areas further degrades the shrubland and grassland habitats this species requires for survival.
Habitat
This endemic shrub inhabits dry shrublands, grasslands, and woodland margins in montane and submontane regions of East Africa. It typically grows in well-drained soils at elevations between 1,200-2,400 meters, often on rocky slopes and in areas with seasonal rainfall patterns.
