Betta hipposideros
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Betta hipposideros faces severe habitat degradation from palm oil plantation expansion and logging activities throughout its native range in Peninsular Malaysia. Water pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development has contaminated the shallow forest streams this species depends on for breeding and survival. The species' extremely limited distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to localized habitat destruction, with entire populations potentially eliminated by single development projects.
Habitat
This species inhabits shallow, slow-moving forest streams and small tributaries in lowland tropical rainforests of Peninsular Malaysia. It prefers areas with dense vegetation cover, soft substrates, and slightly acidic water conditions typical of Southeast Asian peat swamp forests.
