Conservation Outlook

Outlook: Deteriorating

Guinea's biodiversity significance stems from its position within the Upper Guinea Forest ecosystem, part of the West African Forests biodiversity hotspot. The country encompasses diverse biomes from the Guinea Highlands' montane forests to Atlantic coastal mangroves and the transition zone between forest and savanna ecosystems. The Fouta Djallon plateau serves as the "water tower of West Africa," supporting unique highland vegetation and endemic species. According to IUCN Red List 2025 data, all five assessed species in Guinea are threatened, representing 100% plant species under evaluation. The limited assessment scope suggests significant data gaps in understanding the country's full biodiversity status. Primary threats include deforestation driven by agricultural expansion, particularly slash-and-burn farming practices, and mining activities targeting bauxite deposits in forested regions. The Fouta Djallon faces degradation from overgrazing and unsustainable land use practices. Guinea has established several protected areas, including Badiar National Park and Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve (shared with Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia), a UNESCO World Heritage site protecting endemic species. However, enforcement capacity remains limited. Community-based conservation initiatives are emerging in some regions, focusing on sustainable forest management. The trajectory appears concerning given the complete threat status of assessed species, though expanded scientific surveys may reveal a more comprehensive picture of conservation needs.
