Conservation Outlook

Outlook: Deteriorating

The Democratic Republic of Congo harbors exceptional biodiversity across the Congo Basin, containing approximately 60% of Africa's remaining tropical rainforest. This vast territory encompasses diverse ecosystems from the Central African rainforests to montane forests in the Albertine Rift, recognized as one of Africa's most important biodiversity hotspots. The country hosts an estimated 10,000 endemic plant species and serves as habitat for iconic megafauna including forest elephants, bonobos, and mountain gorillas. While IUCN Red List 2025 data shows limited assessment coverage with only 4 plant species evaluated, all classified as threatened, the country faces severe biodiversity pressures. Artisanal mining operations, particularly for cobalt and coltan, fragment critical habitats across eastern provinces. Slash-and-burn agriculture driven by population growth destroys approximately 500,000 hectares of forest annually. Armed conflict in North Kivu and Ituri provinces disrupts conservation activities and enables illegal wildlife trafficking, particularly affecting elephant populations for ivory trade. Infrastructure development, including proposed hydroelectric projects on the Congo River, threatens aquatic ecosystems. Bushmeat hunting intensifies around urban centers like Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, depleting wildlife populations. Climate change compounds these pressures through altered precipitation patterns affecting forest regeneration. The combination of weak governance, limited resources, and ongoing instability severely hampers conservation enforcement across this biodiversity-critical nation.
